She has slogged through leech-infested swamps in Asia, stood face-to-business-end with an elephant seal on the South Island of New Zealand, and negotiated her way through the maternity ward of a colony of vampire bats, tucked into the pitch-black recesses of a Central American cave. But Gianna Savoie has more than an insatiable appetite for adventure, she’s got a passion for the environment that drives her to sink her teeth into some of the most critical conservation stories on the planet.

An award-winning documentary producer and writer with over a decade of experience in Natural History filmmaking, Gianna’s work has been featured world-wide on Discovery, PBS, Animal Planet, and National Geographic, among others.

Trained as a scientist, with a Master’s degree in Environmental Biology, she pairs her love of science with the art of filmmaking to craft the stories that not only inform, but deeply resonate. Her pursuit of powerful environmental storytelling has led her high over Himalayan peaks and deep through the Amazon basin to explore the direct connections between humans and the natural world. Whether filming rangers on patrol as they chase down illegal fishermen in protected Caribbean waters, or taking on the winter wilderness with the bold few who have spent years on the wolverine’s trail, Gianna is committed to telling the stories that serve to protect all things wild.

Gianna recently wrote and produced the Emmy nominated film, Wolverine: Chasing the Phantom, a one-hour documentary for the PBS series, NATURE and National Geographic Channel International. It is a glimpse into the world of one of the planet’s most elusive and misunderstood carnivores. In addition to its recent Emmy nomination, the film has received a Cine Golden Eagle Award in the category of “Environment and Science,” won “Best Film Made in Montana” as well as a Merit for Scientific Content at the 2010 International Wildlife Film Festival, and was a Finalist in the 2010 Banff Mountain Film Festival.

Her previous film, Life in Death Valley, also for NATURE, has received over a dozen awards including: “Best Television Program of 2006,” from the Montana Cine Film Festival, “Best Film about an Ecosystem” from the International Wildlife Film Festival, and the 2007 Cine Golden Eagle “Special Jury Award” for best film in its category of Environment and Natural Science.

Gianna has also developed an Ethno-botany museum in Belize and has written an illustrated guide to the use of Belizean Rainforest plants. Her stories and articles have appeared in print publications around the world and on the web.
